Troubleshooting Connection to Your Student Records

There are security issues involved in accessing your records online. The connection needed for you to send and retrieve information on your student records from Trinity's web database can occasionally run into conflict with security settings either from your ISP, or from security settings on your computer.

Known Connection Issues:

  • Compuserve and AOL software block the information transfer. When browsing the web using either AOL or Compuserve's software the site does not open. SOLUTION: Try connecting using the provided software, but then open up Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator and go to the site. If there are no other issues, this usually works.
  • Firewalls and Anti-Virus software are common culprits. They will both try to restrict information access. To test to see if this is the problem, turn off all anti-virus and firewall software for a moment and see if you can access the database records. If you can, then the problem lies in the protection software. SOLUTION: Usually anti-virus and firewall software have a place where you can enter" trusted sites". The trusted sites are places where the software knows it can allow the information transfer. Consult your particular product's documentation and help files to see how to allow the database site access through the firewall or anti-virus software.
  • You ISP might be blocking the site. SOLUTION: You will have to contact your service provider to find out what can be done about this. Trinity has no control over what sites are allowed or not allowed by an ISP.
  • Your browser might be timing out. The database server is slower than a standard web server, so the pages take longer to load. Browsers with short time-outs may give up on the pages before they load. SOLUTION: Increase your browser time-out settings.
  • Security on the Browser is set too high. This is not a common problem, but custom settings can sometimes interfere. The recommenced setting of "Medium", with all others set at factory default should be adequate.

Remember, security is important on your computer. Trinity College does not advocate eliminating firewalls, anti-virus software, or removing all computer security in order to access your records. You should be able to work with either your ISP or your security software in order to reach a solution. While Trinity cannot promise that they can correct the situation for you, we will offer whatever suggestions we can give. So if you have tried the above and are still unable to access your records, please contact techsupport@trinitysem.edu detailing what your situation is and what you have already tried and we will do our best to help.
